We also prefer that the foods we eat are pleasing to the palate as well as containing the right proportions of nutrients in the form of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber, that are, together with water, the building blocks of life.

Essential components of those nutrients are minerals and vitamins required by the cells of the body to perform their complex roles in keeping us functioning and in good health with minimal side effects so that we don’t have to spend monies on things like cellulite treatments and best acne treatments.

Many vitamins and minerals are essential for optimum health but, unfortunately, the human body cannot manufacture them in sufficient quantities and instead depends on the daily dietary intake as their source.

However, in the world of today, compared with the past, the refining, processing, and storage of foods, and the farming of depleted soils, may lead to a loss of some of the naturally occurring vitamins and minerals to the extent that it becomes necessary on a daily basis to add pharmaceutically produced supplements to our food.

So what can we do to provide the missing vitamins and minerals?

Since quite a few are required, considered as “essential”, one of the best ways to provide the necessary vitamins and minerals to the body is with a multi-vitamin, a “one-a-day” supplement, instead of a number of separate vitamin tablets, pills, or capsules.

There are many such multi-vitamin formulations available on the market nowadays — but it is difficult for any shopper to know which of those provide an effective mix and amounts of the required substances, so making the correct choice may become a problem.

Vitamins and minerals also available in liquid form

Among the many that are suitable, you might also consider, rather than pills or capsules, multi vitamins in the increasingly popular liquid form, such as the GBG Ten-in-One version, containing as it does so many of the essential ingredients in the quantities that make them effective and easy to take as a supplementary source. A list of the vitamins and minerals in this product can be found by clicking Ten-in-One ingredients . You may have to enlarge the chart and text there for better legibility.

Vitamins and minerals play an important role in staying healthy and helping to prevent diseases and disorders, as does proper nutrition provided by the right choices of foods consumed in quantities in keeping with a person’s caloric needs based on their energy expenditures in their daily activities at work and play.

This becomes especially important as we age or when an individual does become affected by a particular disease or condition, conditions such as elevated cholesterol levels, weakened joints and infirmities that are perhaps the result of arthritis, overweight as a result of lack of exercise and from eating too many fatty foods, heart disease or high blood pressure, and diabetes, a disease growing to epidemic proportions in North America where 26 million already have the disease and face its serious consequences. Can diet, vitamins and minerals play a part in dealing with these conditions?

Yes, there is evidence that they can, together with exercise, and appropriate meal planning it has been shown that they are effective and helpful. But meal planning can be boring and takes effort. Regarding meal planning, if you are a diabetic you may wish to visit Diabetic Menu Guide, where various aspects of food, exercise, weight-loss, are discussed with suggestions on the elements of nutrition to consider in constructing a suitable menu plan. Other sites of interest in this category are Diabetes Information Exchange and Diabetic Food List.

A cautionary note:
In the case of disease conditions, such as those mentioned above, it is necessary to be under the care of a doctor who will provide the proper medical treatment, guidance and monitoring of an individual’s ailment or disease, including advice on how to adopt appropriate life-style modifications if needed.

If you are like a lot of my friends you are starting to look for more natural remedies for medical issues. Do you wonder about what you can use to naturally promote thick and healthy hair? Are you starting to notice hair thinning or maybe even a balding spot where you used to have good hair growth? If so, this article may be what you have been searching for. In this post we will look at which vitamins you absolutely must take in order to promote hair growth. You will see which are the best vitamins for hair loss and which of the vitamins will help to improve your body’s ability to produce the thick, luscious hair you desire. After reading this article you’ll have a list of vitamins to get and you’ll feel better knowing you are selecting the vitamins that are best at helping to grow healthy hair.

B Vitamins

The absolute most important group of vitamins for hair growth are the family of B vitamins. Stress has been shown to be a contributor to premature hair loss and B’s have been shown to help your body deal with stress. Also, other members of the B family, in particular Biotin and Niacin, can help with circulation and blood flow to the scalp. This increased blood flow actually can help promote healthy hair follicles by supplying them with the necessary nutrients they need to produce keratin the hair shaft material.

Vitamin C

I am sure you have heard about many of the dramatic health benefits of vitamin C. Linus Pauling, the first person to discover this vitamin, called it the most important nutrient for our well being. But, did you know it can help to give you healthy hair? It has great anti-oxidant properties which stop the free radicals found in our bodies from attacking important growth elements like our hair follicles. So at breakfast tomorrow be sure to have your orange juice, this will not only help you to fight off colds it will do your hair a favor also.

Vitamin A

This vitamin is often times overlooked but it is great to assist in hair growth because it actually helps to lubricate the hair follicles. It doesn’t take much A to be effective though and it can build up in the body to be sure to only take the recommended daily dose.

If you are suffering the embarrassment of hair loss you know how your self-worth suffers. Our society puts a lot of emphasis on hair for both men and women. Balding men are often times thought to be ten to fifteen years above their actual age and a women with bald spots is usually thought to have some disease. Luckily, you can start on a hair loss treatment by making sure you are taking all the vitamins mentioned above. Although in general people in the US do not have nutritional problems, if you are on a restricted diet you can be missing out on necessary vitamins. If you keep your body healthy and feed it the proper nutrients you have taken to first step to dealing with hair loss.

Hello GBG Family!
Hundreds of you heard last night’s year-end Announcement Call and judging from all the emails, texts and calls we’ve been receiving, YOU GOT IT! We’ve made GBG easier than ever for everyone to succeed; and therefore more powerful and more profitable as well.

We had an email all ready to send out to everyone re-capping all the points I shared on the call last night, but I was told by many of you that the call itself, not just the information, was what got through to them so powerfully. So we decided to give you a link to listen to the call in its entirety by just clicking here:

Listen to last night’s most Amazing Conference Call…

Then I read an email sent out by one of our Executive Vice Presidents to his team and I had to call and ask him if I could share it with everyone. This is the first of our GBG Leadership emails that will be coming to you regularly from our various leaders around the country; leaders that are experiencing huge success and willing to share their insights with everyone.

So read the rest of this email, click on the link to hear last night’s call, and stay tuned for more great information from our amazing GBG leaders.

God Bless and Happy New Year,
Stuart Finger & Your GBG Family

——————————————

“WOW….! If you were on last night’s GBG corporate conference call you know exactly what I mean by WOW…! Simplicity and Duplication is the key to success in your GBG business…!

First off, the New Just Push Play DVD is shipping starting December 31st. We’ve all been waiting for it and now it’s here. It includes all the newest videos from your website, including the New Step 2 video that is up and running on your opportunity page of your website. Go listen to it and see how easy GBG has made this marketing plan to understand and attract new Reps. Available now, check your back office for a great deal on Ten Just Push Play Videos shipped with 100 10-in-One fliers. It just doesn’t get easier…! Bring someone a flier and pop in the DVD and you will have a new customer/Rep in a heartbeat.

Starting immediately every new customer/Rep that joins our team only needs 2 customers of their own to achieve Regional Manager position. That’s right, only 2 gets you 10 levels of Matrix pay from now on. GBG has eliminated the ATM position and replaced it with the RM position. Ten levels of Matrix pay can provide you with over $2,000 per month in residual pay once your Matrix reaches a full 10 levels. Imagine watching your monthly income increase from one month to the next as new customers and/or Reps continue to join your team from your efforts, your up-lines efforts and the efforts of your newest team members. How cool is that…..! Imagine how an extra $2,000 plus dollars can help pay off some of the holiday bills we are all left with now that the holidays are over and the unpaid bills will soon start showing up.

Even better than that is the new Senior Regional Manager (SRM) position, that pays up to 15 levels in the Matrix and expands your income potential to over $17,000 per month. All an RM has to do to advance their income potential by another $15,000 is help any 2 personally sponsored customer/Reps to achieve 2 customers of their own and become a RM themselves. That’s right again, all you have to do is personally sponsor 2 Reps and help them gather 2 customers of their own and you take a promotion to SRM. You will receive an additional 5 levels of Matrix pay at 25 cents per product. It may not sound like much but if you do the math, it adds up to an additional $15,000 per month.

If this does not sound interesting enough to set your hair on fire let me explain how excited my son Nick Jr was when he received his December 23rd Matrix pay check. As a Regional Vice President (RVP) Nick Jr now gets paid $2.00 per product from levels 1 – 10. As a RVP Nick Jr also gets $1.00 from levels 11 – 15. Nick Jr’s income from levels 11- 15 was higher than all of his first 10 levels combined. That’s the power of building depth in your organization, because depth creates width and much more money for you in the long run.

Nick Jr & his wife Shandelle just had a new born baby named Airelle, the GBG blessing here is Shandelle does not have to go back to work because of Nick’s additional ever growing GBG Matrix income. She can raise her child as my Mom raised me back in 1952. Oh yeah, I am also blessed with a new Granddaughter and couldn’t be happier for helping my son earn his RVP position. By the way, Nick Jr sponsored less than 14 people in 9 months time but gets paid on over 1,850 product consumers. Amazing how so little work can change your future forever, isn’t it….!

In a nutshell, GBG offers great affordable health products, a FREE business worth thousands, tons of training & support with excellent marketing tools, minimal effort required on your part and a marketing plan that is simple and second to none. All you have to do is get on any one product yourself, share GBG’s 10-in-One with as few as 2 people and help them do the same and you’re positioned as a SRM to earn over $17,000 per month in residual Matrix pay. If you know of anything that’s Free to join and is easier to do than GBG, please take me with you, but you have to prove it to me first and that may just be impossible. There is nothing else out there like GBG….!

As in anything worth anything, these things will take time, but now is the time to build your GBG business bigger than ever. If you do, this I can promise you, by this time next year you will not need to do anything else but GBG as your main source of income. What’s good about that is the income is on Auto- Pilot which means you can do whatever you want with your time and not have to worry about where your income is coming from any more. Just like my family does now.

This is the first Holiday Season in quite some time that I was able to enjoy the holidays without having to leave my house every day to bring home the bacon to pay the bills. The bacon was being made everyday and all the bills are paid by the efforts of thousands of satisfied customers taking GBG products every day and the hundreds of dedicated Reps that are also building their GBG businesses right along with mine. That’s why I work so hard helping my reps achieve RM, RVP & EVP positions. If I can help them achieve their goals, my goals are always taken care of. What a concept…!

Let me ask you one question. Is that the way it works for you at your current job. Does your boss go out of his way to make sure all your dreams become a reality? Only you can answer that question, but I think I can read your mind on your answer. The reason I think I know your answer is because I am the boss of another business I own, that right now is barley surviving the economy. I can tell you right now that my only concern in that business is my bottom line and whether I can keep my doors open at the end of each week. Let me tell you, each week gets harder and harder. The boss always comes first and please don’t ever forget that. It’s all about the boss in a conventional business and it has to be that way, however, in my GBG business it’s completely the opposite. I can only succeed in GBG financially if others on my team see success for them selves. Again, what a concept…! The sooner you can adapt to building something together with people as a team the better off your GBG business will be and the sooner you can take control of your life again.

Now that 2010 is only a day away, why not make the mental changes and the physical commitment necessary to be where you want to be by this same time next year? It will be here before you know it. Trust me when I say, you’ll be happy you did your next December Holiday Season.

It’s all up to you, it always is, but please remember, you have me, Nick Verrengia, on your side to help you achieve any goal you want to in GBG.

I want to wish you all a Safe and Healthy New Year,

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work….!

God Bless You All and Stuart Finger, CEO of GBG for this Great Opportunity,

Nick Verrengia
Executive Vice President”

Listen to last night’s most Amazing Conference Call…

It is absolutely essential if you intend on growing your business and your team members. Below you will find three tips on how to attract people to your business naturally.

Twitter Marketing

Twitter is a very popular social media site that any marketer can build a huge list of home business leads. However, it must be done the correct way.

When marketing your business with Twitter, you want to add value to the site as well. Be sure to offer helpful links that are not for your benefit but for others. Also, occasionally tweet about something valuable without including a link.

If you utilize article marketing for your home business, link a few of your articles on your tweets. This will give your followers some valuable information they can read as well as promote your business through your resource box.

Finally, be sure to hand out your Twitter ID on other sites and ask people to follow you. The more followers you have, the more chances of recruiting them in your home based business.

Social Network Sites

These types of sites which include MySpace, Facebook, CafeMom and Bebo offer huge potential to find home based business leads. You should set up your profiles on these sites with information about you and your business. This will be the only advertising you do. Once your profile is set, go around these sites and join groups, participate in forums and invite people to be your friend. It is through relationship building that people will notice your profile and begin asking you questions about your business.

SEO and Article Marketing

This is a very effective technique in building your business. Simply write 250 to 500 word articles relevant to your business and optimize them with long-tailed keywords. You want to pick keyword phrases with high monthly searches but low competition. Be sure to include your primary keyword phrase in the anchor text in your resource box. Search engines will find and index your articles which will give you tons of free traffic and leads for your business.

These are just three ways to find home business leads for your business. Use your imagination and stay consistent. Most of all, have fun with it and before you know it, your business will be growing on a daily basis and taking up a life of it’s own.

—

Eczema afflicted skin needs moisturizers or lotions, but products that adults use to remedy their eczema are just too potent for young skin. You are forced to choose from a small array of child products that are typically not enough to remedy eczema.

Fortunately, you do not have to settle for products that do not fully work. It can be quite easy for you to bolster those products, improving their soothing and healing properties. Furthermore, you will be surprised how easily you can do it.

Blueberry leaf and licorice extracts have known to be an effective eczema treatment for children and also that adults can turn to for relief and therapy. Adults can typically use a concentrated amount of the extract directly on their skin. For young skin, you can use the same remedy in a more diluted form.

Simply add a few drops of the blueberry leaf or licorice extracts to your lotion and you will be giving the lotion an amazing but safe power boost. After you have the desired amount of lotion in the palm of your hand, add a couple drops of the extract. Rub your hands together until the extract is thoroughly mixed with the lotion, then apply it as normal to your child.

If your child is suffering from eczema eyelid issues, you may want to forgo lotion there in favor of aloe vera gel. This gel can be bought cheaply over the counter and is a great way to moisturize and heal the afflicted skin.

Even aloe can be improved using the nourishing properties of vitamin E. The best way to add vitamin E is to buy it in capsule form. Squeeze the contents of one capsule into your hand and then mix it with the desired amount of aloe. Just as the lotion above, you will be creating a safe and effective home remedy to help your child overcome eczema.

We may take vitamins, but half the time we don’t even realize the health benefits that you get out of them. Our bodies require certain vitamins and minerals to function properly. Some of these we may obtain out of food, but oftentimes we require supplements to give us exactly what we
need. One of the most important vitamins that we require is Vitamin C. Though many of us tend to turn to it only when we feel a cold coming on, it is essential and beneficial for a wide array of things. So as you lead a healthier life and get all of the nutrients that your body requires, here are the things you need to know about the powerhouse known as Vitamin C.

What is Vitamin C Used For?

Vitamin C, otherwise known as ascorbic acid, is used for a variety of functions in the body. Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissue throughout our body. It is also responsible for the formation of collagen, and this is used in skin, tissue, tendons, ligaments, and in our blood. Vitamin C is also essential for healing wounds, and that’s how many people know it. It helps with repairing bones and cartilage, so it can come in handy with even the smallest wound that an individual suffers from. Vitamin C helps our body to function properly and ensures that we heal as we are meant to, no matter how serious the injury or wound.

How Much Do We Need?

Though our body produces some level of Vitamin C on its own, we require additional levels. We may get some level of Vitamin C through food, but it’s often not enough. Though many foods contain Vitamin C, the levels that we may consume in a given day often fluctuate and that means that we need to turn to a supplement. For most healthy people,
it is recommended that they take anywhere from 500-1000mg daily for the best results.

What Happens if You are Deficient in Vitamin C?

Though it hasn’t actually been a health problem in many years, people are familiar with the onset of scurvy if you don’t consume enough Vitamin C. However in recent years, there are more serious and common health problems that come about as a result of a Vitamin C deficiency. Those who don’t have proper levels of Vitamin C may suffer from
recurring nose bleeds, may be prone to bruising easily, may have swollen joints, may have inflamed gums, may have flaky skin, and may have very dry hair. As you can see, ensuring proper levels of Vitamin C are essential to many aspects of our health.

It’s important to eat all the right foods to consume Vitamin C. These include sweet potatoes, citrus fruits, kiwi, green peppers, brussel sprouts, and a variety of fresh and raw fruits and vegetables. It’s also crucial to take a Vitamin C supplement to ensure you keep your body functioning properly and that you stay healthy overall.

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of scam is

“a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation”

Source

I’m sure many will argue that because GBG is a MLM or network marketing opportunity, that makes it a scam.

According to BusinessDictionary.com, the definition of network marketing is:

“Direct selling method in which independent-agents serve as distributors of goods and services, and are encouraged to build and manage their own sales force by recruiting and training other independent agents. In this method, commission is earned on the agent’s own sales revenue, as well as on the sales revenue of the sales-force recruited by the agent and his or her recruits (called downline). Also called multilevel marketing (MLM), cellular marketing, or by other such names, it is a multi-billion dollar worldwide industry that distributes practically any portable item, although restricted or banned in several countries due to its history as a vehicle for consumer fraud. Said to have been pioneered by the now-defunct California Vitamin Company in 1941, it is a method employed by large firms such Amway, Melaleuca, Nikken, and Shaklee-Nagamuchi.”

Source

Some swear by the fact that only the guy who gets in at the top make a lot. Because of this, MLM or Network Marketing is also sometimes referred to as a pyramid scheme:

“Chain-recruiting scam in which the main objective is to continuously bring in new members (euphemistically called sales representatives, independent representatives, or even ‘investors’) than to sell anything of real value. In this scheme, ‘A’ recruits ‘B’ and ‘C,’ who in turn recruit ‘D’ and ‘E’ and ‘F’ and ‘G,’ who in turn recruit and so on. Every new member pays an entrance fee (typically called ‘investment’ or some other beguiling name) which is divided among his or her recruiter, recruiter’s recruiter, and right up to the originator of the scheme. This charade continues until the whole structure collapses from the ever growing need for more and more gullible recruits and everybody (except the promoters and the early recruiters) loses out. See also Ponzi scheme. Not to be confused with pyramiding.”

Source

MLM, network marketing, pyramid schemes, whatever you want to call it – they’re not scams, if you go back and read the definition of scam. Why? Many reputable business companies have and are building successful business models on the same principles that MLMs are built on. The only difference is an MLM makes it possible for the “little guy” to succeed with no large investment or timely/expensive training (i.e. school). Still thinking GBG may be a scam?

So, What Constitutes a Business?

Leverage is crucial in the success of ANY business. And the MLM network marketing industry has more leverage to offer than any other business model. Leverage allows for duplication and duplication allows for your efforts to multiply. It’s the simple law of “you reap what you sow” also known as “karma.” And I’m almost sure we’ve all heard ”time is money” at one point or another.

Here’s what it takes to start any type of business:

Talent. In terms of with people, foresight in the marketplace, accumulating resources, sales, etc.

A vision. A mission statement or purpose (of what you want to deliver, the best customer service, best product, etc.)

Resources. Sometimes 10’s of thousands, 100’s of thousands or millions of dollars, in the form of capital. Also people. Who do you know?

Executive Staff. CEO, President, Vice President, Manager, Communications, Programmer, Writer, Designer, Image Consultant, Warehouse, Research and Development, Analyst, etc. A good exec staff adds to amount needed in resources.

Legal Help. Literature needs to be compliant with the FTC or FDA.

Product Manufacturers. Without this you don’t have a product. If health, you need Dr’s, labs, know how, compliance, expertise, etc.

Copywriters. Sales letters create millions of dollars.

Web Developers. Company sites don’t always know what the prospect wants.

Audio/Visual. You need press kits, savvy material.

Pressure. You have to be able to handle it all and make it all work.

Marketing/Advertising. You need someone to market what you have. You need to have people come through the door.

Physical Location. Office, overhead, employees, phone system, supplies, etc.

Sounds like a lot, right?

It’s All About Outsourcing and Teamwork with an MLM Business Opportunity

So, you want to be in business but you don’t have the 12 things needed to start a business. Well, the MLM, network marketing, direct sales, interpersonal marketing companies – they are the ones who put up the millions of dollars, stress, pressure, advertising, risk, etc involved in starting an MLM Business Opportunity.

The MLM network marketing industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. Why? Because it’s all about leverage in business. It’s all about outsourcing and teamwork. The MLM network marketing industry allows you to contract in your own company – which ever one that you desire. There are hundreds, if not thousands, to choose from. GBG is a great example of an economic company you may like to contract in. They have a proven track record and because of the lower start up price, you will have more monies available to spend on your business and personal development skills. GBG allows you a FREE business opportunity, all you pay for is a low cost monthly commitment – and you have a few affordable options available to fit your line of health care needs.

With an MLM Business Opportunity you have the chance to leverage the skills you don’t have against what an MLM network marketing company has. You don’t have millions of dollars, thousands of resources, etc. – but you may have, for example, time.

Not only does an MLM home based business allow you a way to supplement and eventually replace your income, but it also offers the possibility of tax savings. For example: most times you can use your own home phone system, Internet service, etc. in a home based business and get it all as a tax write off.

Why Choose Network Marketing? Why are people succeeding in this type of industry? Why try this type of home based business? Listen to this audio with Dani Johnson, self made millionaire at 23, to find out how so many are making millions in the interpersonal marketing industry. Simply set up a FREE account to access over 50 hours of FREE personal and business development audios, then click on the above permalink.

Last, but not least… MLM Network Marketing Training

Would you rather put up the expenses to start a business or partner with a company that has already made that commitment? The MLM network marekting industry has created THE MOST millionaires. More than any other industry.

While all that’s great, are you one of the many wondering:

What about the people that fail?

What causes some to fail?

Don’t feel alone. Unfortunately, a few of us know of at least one person who has failed a MLM business opportunity. If you are wondering why some do fail, the answer is actually quite simple – Not working or working on the wrong things.

Can you succeed? Of course! There are already millions of people in this industry making money as well as millions more getting started every year.

Training and development is a necessary key for success in any inustry. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, contractors – all successful individuals went through some kind of training. Specialized knowledge helps save you money in the long run and can help you NOT make mistakes that may cost you your business. In order to be successful in your MLM business opportunity, you will want to learn how to become profitable and not making costly or timely mistakes.

Because the ratio of those that get started in the MLM network marketing industry to those that fail is so high, the GBG Team Belief has outsourced their training to Dani Johnson. Dani went from being a broke cocktail waitress, living out of her car in Hawaii, to making her first million in just two short years at the age of 23. And she’s gone on to make millions more and even equipped thousands more to do the same! But don’t just take my word for it…

“Prior to getting in business for myself and getting started with Dani Johnson, I was $116,000 in debt, I was working 50-60 hours a week, our household income was $25,000/year and I was the sole income provider for our family. I got started in business, didn’t know what to do, I didn’t have the training I needed to succeed and I had made no money. When I came to my very first First Steps To Success, I made $13,000 my very first month, and so far this year, I quite my full-time job, my business is my full-time job, and I’ve actually made a little over $135,000 in less tan a year!” ~ Stacy O’Quinn

The Flaws of Network Marketing

There are some flaws in this industry just like there are flaws in the medical industry, real estate, politics, technology, and many other industries. There are two (2) major flaws:

It’s too inexpensive to get in, therefore there’s nothing to lose, which leads to inadequate commitment levels. There is no eager desire.

Training. There are unprofessional sales people out there and you want to set yourself apart from them. There’s more involved than what you see and many start doing the wrong things. You need to be going in the right direction with training and development.

There’s flaws everywhere. But there’s no comparison in both the risks and flaws of a network marketing business vs a traditional business. You can be anybody from anywhere and you can outsource the company, expertise, advertising and all you do is generate the bodies. It’s really a simple thing to learn.

What are you going to do about it? We, as Americans, share a 33 trillion dolalr debt and are in a health and financial crisis. What are you going to do to not end up in the 98% of the population who is dead or dead broke by the age of 65? And lately who hasn’t notice that people are losing their jobs by the thousands.

You can be in a business writing off your business expenses working from home and outsourcing all the training – you just have to learn how to master the basics. with others who also want to be professionals in the MLM network marketing industry – leading it the way it really should be represented.

They are all nutritional supplements that are growing increasingly popular via media streams and also increasing in sales. In fact, a 2002 study by the ADA titled Nutrition and You found that 49% of U.S. adults are already using a nutritional supplement daily. And despite the barreling economy consumers obviously felt health care was a top priority since sales of nutritional supplements have increased 5.9% (thru Dec 27, 2008); the result was $3.8 billion in vitamin and other supplement sales, according to Nielsen. While food is the preferred source of vitamin and mineral nutrition for our diets, I believe it’s safe to say that most of us realize we are in need of some form of nutritional supplementing. Vitamin and mineral supplements equal to or below the “Tolerable Upper Limits” (UL) are usually considered the best and safest for the vast majority of the population.

Vitamin & Mineral Nutritional Supplements: Who Benefits?

Supplements can indeed have a positive effect on health. Some examples of who may benefit from vitamin and mineral supplements are :

People with vitamin and mineral deficiencies

Newborns (vitamin K)

People living in areas without a supply of fluoridated water

Vegans (vitamins B12 and D)

Pregnant women (iron and folate)

People experiencing blood loss (iron)

Persons on limited or restricted diets (multiple vitamins & minerals)

Adults at risk for heart disease (folate, Vitamin E)

People at risk for osteoporosis due to low calcium intake and poor vitamin D status (calcium, vitamin D)

“You can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment to a mineral deficiency.” – Dr. Linus Pauling, winner of 2 Nobel prizes

Vitamins and minerals have widely and increasingly been recognized as the standard treatment for deficiency diseases. Generally, the long care treatment or cure for deficiency diseases is dietary improvements. Yet, vitamin and mineral supplements are also showing potential promise as “preventative medicine” for certain disorders and as an important part of the treatment of others. Some improvements or preventative examples are:

Supplemental vitamin C and E are associated with a decreased risk of cataracts in the elderly.

Calcium and vitamin D supplements play a role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in some people.

Doses of Vitamin C of about one gram daily appear to decrease the severity and duration of colds.

Vitamin E may help protect against the harmful effects of air pollution and may reduce the risk of heart disease.

Using Vitamin and Mineral Supplements for the Wrong Reason

People often take supplements as a sort of insurance policy against problems caused by poor diets. Although multivitamin, mineral, and other nutritional supplements may help fill in some of the nutrient gaps caused by poor diet choices and food habits, they definitely can’t make a bad diet good. Whether a diet is good or bad is determined by more than just its vitamin and mineral content. The “goodness” of a diet also depends on its caloric, fat, cholesterol, fiber, water, complex carbohydrate, and protein content. A lot or combination of nutrients is taken into account. Additionally, many supplements do not provide substances found in food such as flavones, phenols, lycopene, thiocynates, and other important compounds that may have a positive influence on overall health and wellness.

One of the most serious consequences of consuming supplements results when they are used as a remedy for health problems that can be treated, but not by vitamins or minerals. Vitamin and mineral supplements are still undergoing studies to test their effectiveness or treatment for behavioral problems, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, obesity, or stress, for example.

The Rational Use of Vitamins and Minerals as a Nutritional Supplement

Like all medications, vitamin and mineral supplements should generally only be taken if there is a need for them. Exceeding the UL of vitamins can impose some nasty health risk ranging from headaches and nausea to death. The same stands true for minerals; taking excessive amounts of minerals can result in consequences such as dehydration, high blood pressure, infertility, liver disease, and more. If a nutrition supplement is taken, dosages should not be excessive.

7 Simple Guidelines for Choosing, Using, and Buying Nutritional Supplements

Choose supplements that contain 100% of the Daily Value (DV) or less; more is OK, but the supplement in question should never exceed the Tolerable Upper Levels (ULs).

Check the expiration date on the supplement in question and only use unexpired supplements.

If you have been diagnosed with a need for a specific vitamin or mineral it is generally best to take that vitamin or mineral and not a multiple supplement. However, a multiple supplement is generally suitable if it contains an amount equal to or exceeding the specific prescribed amount.

Try to avoid calcium supplements that are made from oyster shells or bone. They may contain unsafe levels of lead or aluminum.

Try to buy a nutritional supplement that contains substances found in food such as flavones, phenols, lycopene, and others.

Take supplements with meals, not as a substitute for a meal. Remember: healthy food choices should be your main source of nutrition. The sole purpose of supplements is to just fill in the gaps.

Store supplements out of the reach of small children.

Please consult your physician, dietician, or health care provider about your health problems and specific supplemental needs before taking supplements on your own.
